Unique gifts for Dad that he will remember

By Dustin and Gabi, the founders of EverTold · Updated

A unique gift for Dad is something he gets to do or tell rather than own: a lesson he teaches you, a trip back to his hometown, a piece of his past restored, or EverTold, which asks him real questions out loud and keeps his answers as narrated stories the whole family can hear.

Dads are famously hard to shop for. He buys what he needs, and what he wants usually costs too much or is too specific to guess.

What lasts is different: time with you, something he gets to teach, and the chance to tell the stories nobody has asked him about.

Ideas that are about him

  1. EverTold: their life stories, told in their own words

Many dads will not sit down and write, but they will talk if someone asks the right question. EverTold asks out loud, listens and follows up. Every answer becomes a written, narrated story that each relative hears from their own place in the family: "your grandfather" for you, a bedtime story-time version for the grandkids.

  2. Let him teach you something

Fixing the car, smoking a brisket, tying a fly, his card game. Ask for a lesson and make a day of it. Being asked is the gift.

  3. A trip back

His hometown, his old school, the ballpark from his childhood. Go together and let him narrate.

  4. His music or his team, properly

Tickets to the band he played on every road trip or a game with good seats. Experiences age better than gadgets.

  5. Restore something of his

His first watch, an old toolbox, a photo of his parents. Have it repaired or reframed and give it back with a note.

Getting a quiet dad to talk

Plenty of dads will say they "do not have any stories". They do. They just need specific questions: What was your first job and what did it pay? What car did you learn to drive in? What did your father do on Saturdays?

EverTold works this way. You can choose the first three questions he hears when you buy it, and the family can send him more later. His answers come back as stories for everyone.

What only EverTold does

  • Each relative hears the story from their own place in the family

When Mom tells a story about her brother, her daughter hears it as a story about "your uncle" and her grandson hears "your great-uncle", read aloud in a warm storyteller’s voice. Every listener gets the version that makes sense to them.

  • Story time for the grandkids

A grandchild can tap a story at bedtime and hear it retold for a child: the same true story, simpler words, a gentler pace. Adults get the faithful telling.

  • A real conversation, not a writing assignment

EverTold asks a question out loud, listens, and follows up, like a patient grandchild on a phone call. It waits for them to finish. Nobody has to write a thing.

  • Their real voice, kept

The recordings of their answers are saved privately for the family, right next to the written stories, so you keep the way they actually sound.

  • Handed down for generations

A family library that keeps growing, paid for once. No subscription, no renewal, nothing to cancel.

  • The family can ask for more

Anyone in the family can send a question like "Mom, tell me about the farm". It goes to the real person, and their answer comes back as a new story.

A note from Dustin and Gabi

We are a husband and wife, and our family speaks two languages: Gabi’s side Portuguese, Dustin’s side English. When our kids asked about their great-grandfather in Brazil, who left home for the city as a teenager to build a life from nothing, we realized the details that make a person come alive had already been lost. He passed away before we asked him the questions that mattered most.

We still have parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles on both sides, with decades of stories we had never thought to ask about. So we built EverTold for our own family first, and we write these guides the way we choose gifts for them.

Questions

What do you get a dad who does not want anything?

Something he gets to do rather than own: a shared experience, a chance to teach you a skill, or a way to tell his life stories. EverTold turns a conversation into narrated stories the whole family can listen to.

My dad is not a big talker. Will EverTold work for him?

Often especially well. It asks short, specific questions, waits patiently and follows up, so he never faces a blank page. You can choose his first questions yourself.
